To test for SCC, ASTM B858* is one of the most commonly used practices to find susceptible parts. In this test, the samples are placed in a closed vessel above the surface of an ammonia solution at one of several pH levels that are representative of low, moderate, and high environmental corrosivity conditions. The samples are left in the vapor for 24 hours and then examined for the presence of cracking. In many cases, the samples are also cross-sectioned to verify the type of cracking (if cracks are found).
