Welding Procedure Specification Development

The Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is the formal document [1] describing the welding process and procedures. It is a guide to the welder for an accepted procedure that can repeatably achieve quality welds. A WPS is usually developed for each alloy and application. Our team of welders, M.S., and PhD metallurgists work with you to define a WPS for your process. If a process needs research for development, our analysis team will help you fine-tune your welding processes.

Weld Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) – Development and Testing

A WPQR is a company-specific qualification that is needed for each WPS [2]. It proves that the holding company possesses the technical welding knowledge necessary to perform metal joining work. Generally, a new welding procedure qualification record is required each time a welding procedure is introduced as part of the quality assurance process [3]. To obtain the qualification, an independent specialist must observe the new procedure being used on a sample welding plate or pipe.

Once the sample welding plate or pipe had been welded, it is cut into welding test samples, which can then be analyzed in our laboratories by destructive and non-destructive testing.

Weld non-destructive testing usually includes:

  • Visual Inspection,
  • X-ray,
  • Ultrasound Testing (UT),
  • Liquid penetrant (LP), and/or
  • magnetic testing procedures,

  • Tensile Testing,
  • Bend Testing,
  • Charpy Impact Testing,
  • Hardness Measurements,
  • Macro- and Microscopic Analysis
  • Ferrite Content Measurement,
  • CTOD, and/or
  • Corrosion Testing.

We then present the results of these tests in a certificate – the WPQR – which provides a practical assessment of the welding method description and verification that the weld passed the appropriate Weld Certification Tests per AWS and other standards body specifications.
