Rapid Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Analysis by ASTM G150 Methods

Critical pitting and crevice corrosion temperatures can now be rapidly evaluated using the ASTM G150 testing method. Tests that used to take weeks can be achieved in a matter of minutes, with excellent reproducibility. At G2MT Labs, we provide both traditional pitting tests with G150 and crevice corrosion testing per a modified method. In the ASTM G 150 practice, A voltage is applied while we ramp up the temperature, and the critical temperature is noted when a spike in the current occurs. This temperature correlates to the critical pitting temperature for the test solution.

The crevice corrosion testing requires crevice formers to make an electrode like this:

After testing, careful evaluation of the location and size of crevice or pitting corrosion is performed to confirm that the observed spike in current does in fact correlate to corrosion.
